International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)Vacancy Announcement Position: Research Officer III- Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia- Grade: 3C, level 2- Monthly Base Salary: Birr 51,874 (negotiable based on salary history of the selected candidate)- Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for two and half years and nonrenewable. The ILRI/IWMI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site. Job Purpose: The incumbent will be responsible to contribute to the study on out-migration and the impact on rural communities in different regions of Ethiopia under the “Leaving something behind’ - Migration governance and agricultural & rural change in ‘home’ communities: comparative experience from Europe, Asia and Africa” (AGRUMIG) project. He/she will lead research at the country level working as part of a team to produce comparable datasets/material across the project.Key Responsibilities:• Contribute to literature review and database development at country level (bringing together all relevant literature and data that exists in a form that makes it accessible and capable of scientific interrogation).• Review national migration governance literature and prepare report and contribute to country level agriculture and migration literature review paper. The researcher will be the primary author for this report.• Co-designing research protocol for the field research and lead qualitative and quantitative field research in two sites in Ethiopia.• Conduct field research and complete the qualitative and quantitative datasets and analyse the data.• Implement migration governance research and be the primary author of the report.• Prepare agriculture and migration case study report and be the primary author of the report.• Over the project period, prepare, participate in and contribute to five Project Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) meetings, and be the main co-author of several other reports related to the project.• Lead field report and analysis• Contribute/co-lead on at least one scientific article related to the field research plus contribute to policy briefs• In addition, the incumbent will also help co-organise local stakeholder meetings, attend meetings with partner institutions in Austria, Nepal, Kirgizstan, Moldova and Ethiopia and contribute to comparative research articles with other researchers at her/his level in the partner countries.

Education:
• At least MSc degree in political science, sociology, development studies, African studies, geography or social anthropology or related area plus seven year experience
• Experience with the topic of migration and/or rural social transformations is highly desired
Or
• PhD degree in political science, sociology, development studies, African studies, geography or social anthropology or related area plus at least 6 months of work experience in foreign country research institutions (as staff, fellow or graduate students)
• Experience with the topic of migration and/or rural social transformations is highly desired)

Experience:
• Minimum 6 months of work experience in foreign country research institutions (as staff, fellow or graduate students)
• Broad experience in designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative field research
• Extent and relevance of experience in writing high quality research reports and scientific articles.
• Proven experience collaborating with international research teams

Knowledge and Skills:
• Knowledge of conducting socio-economic research, analysing sex disaggregated data and statistics and applying findings to policy
• Knowledge of written and spoken Amharic (knowledge of other Ethiopian languages is a plus)
• Quality publications record as first or contributing author
• Proven capacity to co-organise seminars and stakeholder consultations
• Team work strengths
• Knowledge sharing and learning on the job
• Research analysis skills
• Proven ability to communicate with audiences at different levels (national, international) on issues of social transformation and development
• High level of written and spoken English
• Strategic thinking and capacity to at a policy level
